According to Parent Magazine, there are 13 different classifications of miscarriages a person can experience. One in four women will experience a miscarriage in life. While we take this journey of healing together, we want to make sure that we share the right information with you based on your experience. Granted, our blog has a lot of practical information for you to check out, but we wanted to offer these classifications so you know how we can help. Plus, we’ve experienced very different situations and stressors that we want to walk you through based on these different levels.

Miscarriage (less than 24 weeks)

Most miscarriages happen within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy and women are most at risk to miscarry pithing the earliest few weeks. Miscarriages are broken into two ranges, early-term (0-14 weeks) and late-term (14-24 weeks). According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), miscarriage occurs in 10% of known pregnancies.

Stillbirth to Infant Loss (more than 24 weeks & past birth)

According to the National Stillbirth Society, stillbirth is defined as the intrauterine death and subsequent delivery of a developing infant that occurs beyond 20 completed weeks of gestation. A stillbirth occurs in about 1 in 160 pregnancies. The majority of stillbirths happen before labor, whereas a small percentage occur during labor and delivery.

Infant loss is considered from birth to 1 month (and beyond). For our purposes of what we want to walk with you through, we put these classifications together for multiple reasons. First, you have to deliver the child. Second, you may want to walk through things like having a service, burial and so on. To us, there’s a lot that is similar losing a child beyond 24 weeks.

Most of our resources are specifically geared to women who are in the middle of these difficult situations, but they are not the only ones involved. Fathers of these children are also affected, as are parents, siblings, friends and even co-workers. We have several resources dedicated to supporting others through loss as well that we encourage you to explore.
