What the Bible Says About Grief & Trauma

God’s Word never shies away from talking about tremendous grief, pain, and traumatic events. All throughout the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, you see gut-wrenching and pain-filled stories.

But, throughout Scripture, you also see time after time how God turns terrible things for good, even when things do not feel good at all. In the Bible, you see a beautiful picture of God entering into our extremely hard and painful experiences as He meets us in our greatest time of sorrow and pain.

Walking The Painful Road of Grief and Questioning God

When parents suffer a pregnancy loss or the death of their baby, the pain can be crushing and leave them in a deep state of grief. A major loss like a death often leaves people questioning God and asking questions like “why did you let this happen?” or “am I being punished?”

You will go through stages of grief like denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. But take heart; you won’t stay there forever!

Grief is a process, and everyone goes through the stages differently. Finding a good Christian Counselor or a Care Pastor is especially important for people, as it is crucial that they have someone to point them back to the truth, even if they can’t see it through their grief.  It is normal for people to have a spiritual struggle surrounding the loss, and having wise Christian Counseling is essential to talking through the loss with a Biblical lens of truth.

Biblical Truths About Grief

God sees your grief and will bring comfort

  • Psalm 147:3 He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.

  • Psalm 119:28 My soul melts away for sorrow; strengthen me according to your word!

  • Revelation 21:4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.

Remember that God is in control, even when things feel like they are out of control

  • Job 12:10 In His hand is the life of every living thing and the breath of all mankind.

  • Deuteronomy 31:8 It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.

  • Ecclesiastes 3:11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man's heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.

Remember that God will turn suffering for your good and His Glory, if you allow Him to

  • Isaiah 61:3 - To give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit..

  • Romans 8:28 - And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

  • Isaiah 40:31- But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.

God Is Still Good, Even In The Midst Of Your Pain

Oftentimes, we get caught up in asking God "why”. But I would encourage you to ask him “where were you? God show me where you were in this situation.” When I changed my questioning to this, God blessed me by showing me where he was and how he orchestrated the doctors, nurses, families, and friends to carry us through such a tough season. I would encourage you to ask God this question and watch how he can change your perspective on such a tragic event.
